Snow Woman Too Hot for Town

March 11th, 2010

nudevenus1A family in Rahway, New Jersey, was told by police to cover a nude snow woman after an anonymous complaint. The snow sculpture was a re-creation of the famous Venus de Milo that the family created outside their home.

While most passersby appreciated the sculpture, a green bikini top and blue sarong bottom were added until the snow woman melted when temperatures warmed up.

As AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf said in his Weekly Report, “As long as there are people throughout North America that would actually call law enforcement over a rendering of one of history’s most famous and treasured art pieces in crystals destined to melt in days, there will be an American Association for Nude Recreation providing a voice for common sense treatment of nudity and the human body.”

What Are Your Long Weekend Plans?

February 12th, 2010

This weekend will be a three-day holiday for many with the Presidents Day observation on Monday, February 15. This year, Valentine’s Day will be celebrated the day before. Despite these incentives it doesn’t look to be a very good weekend to enjoy nude recreation, with most of the country experiencing the coldest winter weather in decades.

As we inch toward spring and warm weather when we can enjoy the activities nudists love most, what are some of the ways you plan to go nude this holiday weekend?

An Olympic Moment

February 5th, 2010

With the Vancouver Olympics just weeks away, it’s time to take a fresh look at the robust ways of the ancient Greeks, who performed feats of strength and skill during the first Olympics.  And, to point out that the first Olympics was the earliest documented form of, you guessed it, nude recreation.  In the ancient city of Olympia, the site of these first Olympics, the athletes always competed in the nude. In fact, in Greek, “gymnos” means “nude.”

Nude Cover for Charity Causes Controversy

January 4th, 2010

hawkins

Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins graces the cover of this month’s Australian Marie Claire issue completely naked and sans airbrushing. Hawkins was Miss Universe in 2004 and is working with the Butterfly Foundation to promote positive body image.

Yet, the cover is causing somewhat of a controversy because while some deem her “brave” for posing nude, others feel it’s hardly “brave” for a lingerie model with a near perfect body to appear nude.

Defenders say the cover promotes the fight against obesity and highlights the main goal of the Butterfly Foundation, which is maintaining a healthy body image while fighting eating disorders. Detractors feel that a lingerie model’s body is not an average representation of a normal woman’s body.

MSNBC.com Gives the Skinny on Naked Vacations

November 10th, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

In September, MSNBC travel columnist Christopher Elliott interviewed AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf about the state of clothing-optional travel for an article titled “Nude recreation is fun.” This week, a new, more in-depth article about nude recreation titled “5 reasons to bare it all on your next vacation” was posted at MSNBC.com with a variety of interactive features.

The MSNBC website features a YouTube video, “The skinny on clothing-optional vacations,” a link to the original “Nude recreation is fun” post plus links to other articles of interest about nude recreation. Also included is a poll, “Would you ever strip down for a naked vacation?” So far, out of 1,610 respondents, 64% voted that they “absolutely” are intrigued by the idea of a clothing-optional vacation.

TV Shows Promote Skinny-Dipping

November 6th, 2009

This week, two television shows promoted the joys of skinny-dipping. Nudists, of course, have long known the pleasure of swimming in the buff while feeling the coolness of the water and warmth of the sun against bare skin. Hopefully, after watching these shows, there will be some new converts to skinny-dipping who will wonder what took them so long to try it for themselves.

Channel Canada will air a six-part series “Skinny Dip,” beginning November 18 on Travel & Escape. Following the success of last year’s hour-long special, host Eve Kelly travels the world in search of the best locations to skinny-dip, challenging unsuspecting strangers along the way to try swimming au naturel. Episodes include travels to the Canadian Yukon, Costa Rica, Australia, the Bahamas, British Columbia, and New Zealand.

Wednesday’s “Oprah Winfrey Show” was themed “Step Out of Your Box,” and challenged four women to try things they had never tried before. A mother of four, a woman who just lost her husband and job, a neonatologist, and a single mother of two boys were urged to break from their daily routines. Ali Wentworth guided the women through a roller derby, skydiving–and skinny-dipping.

After the women disrobed and ran into the ocean, one contestant remarked, “Who cares what we look like? We’re just going to literally get out of our skin and be a bunch of gals naked in the ocean.”
