What Are Your Long Weekend Plans?

February 12th, 2010

This weekend will be a three-day holiday for many with the Presidents Day observation on Monday, February 15. This year, Valentine’s Day will be celebrated the day before. Despite these incentives it doesn’t look to be a very good weekend to enjoy nude recreation, with most of the country experiencing the coldest winter weather in decades.

As we inch toward spring and warm weather when we can enjoy the activities nudists love most, what are some of the ways you plan to go nude this holiday weekend?

An Olympic Moment

February 5th, 2010

With the Vancouver Olympics just weeks away, it’s time to take a fresh look at the robust ways of the ancient Greeks, who performed feats of strength and skill during the first Olympics.  And, to point out that the first Olympics was the earliest documented form of, you guessed it, nude recreation.  In the ancient city of Olympia, the site of these first Olympics, the athletes always competed in the nude. In fact, in Greek, “gymnos” means “nude.”

Huffington Post Reports on AANR Press Release

January 14th, 2010

The American Association for Nude Recreation was featured in Wednesday’s Huffington Post Technology section in an article about body scanning at airports. The piece included an excerpt from a press release sent out last week by AANR endorsing the body scanning technology and  a quote by AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf with a link back to the AANR website.

Regular readers of this blog will note that responses to the press release here–and elsewhere–are sharply divided on the issue, as is the media. While some have concerns, recent articles in Newsweek and USA Today have endorsed the scans’ safety and their ability to keep passengers safer.

Not sure what to give that special someone for the holidays this year? Splash Magazines Worldwide has a few suggestions in its just-released gift guide Holiday Travel & Leisure Gifts for 2009–including AANR’s popular Nakation in a Box.

The description reads: “Thinking about giving nude recreation a try, but not sure where to begin? The American Association for Nude Recreation’s (http://www.aanr.com) new Nakation in a Box is a great way to start.” The guide then directs readers to the Nakation page and lists the contents of the box.

This is yet another example of the mainstreaming of nude recreation. Splash Magazine’s gift guide includes everything from spa retreats, luxury hotel and vacation packages, high end sports equipment and miscellaneous gifts for all budgets.

MSNBC.com Gives the Skinny on Naked Vacations

November 10th, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

In September, MSNBC travel columnist Christopher Elliott interviewed AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf about the state of clothing-optional travel for an article titled “Nude recreation is fun.” This week, a new, more in-depth article about nude recreation titled “5 reasons to bare it all on your next vacation” was posted at MSNBC.com with a variety of interactive features.

The MSNBC website features a YouTube video, “The skinny on clothing-optional vacations,” a link to the original “Nude recreation is fun” post plus links to other articles of interest about nude recreation. Also included is a poll, “Would you ever strip down for a naked vacation?” So far, out of 1,610 respondents, 64% voted that they “absolutely” are intrigued by the idea of a clothing-optional vacation.

Help Get A Nude Beach

October 2nd, 2009

Years ago, there was a nude zone on the Maryland portion of the Assateague National Seashore. For the past four years AANR and AANR-East volunteers have designated a day to help clean up the beach at Assateague. This annual event shows how much nudists care about this wonderful beach area, earning the respect of beach officials and local residents in the process.

AANR and AANR-East have been diligently working to restore a nude beach on the Assateague National Seashore. Now is the time that you can help most. The seashore is revising its General Management Plan (GMP) and is taking comments from the public. If enough people write an e-mail or letter requesting a nude beach, officials will consider it in the plan.

Please send a polite message right now to ASIS_GMP@nps.gov. Tell them who you are and why nudity is important to you. If you’re from Virginia or Maryland, be sure to include that information in your e-mail, but all are invited to write because we all pay federal taxes.

While an e-mail is the most immediate way to contact officials, you can also share your comments by sending a letter to:

Assateague Island GMP Team

7206 National Seashore Lane

Berlin, MD 21811

Let’s really pour on the messages so that AANR’s credible voice of reason for nude recreation can be heard.
