Banner Triggers Complaint at Oregon Mall

February 18th, 2010

dsc00571

Last week we heard from AANR Government Affairs Team volunteer Shirley Gauthier with report of a story too important not to pass on.

It seems that Shirley and other volunteers from The Willamettans nudist club in Marcola, Oregon, set up a table alongside other participating members of the area chamber of commerce at an annual event held within a local shopping mall.  Within minutes of putting up a tasteful “window shade” type display banner, they were asked to take the banner down.  Ever diplomatic and cordial, Shirley complied but she did ask why. The reason? Its presence had generated a complaint to mall management.

What triggered the complaint? The words American Association for Nude Recreation, as well as the AANR-Northwest logo that appeared along with very discreet pictures, shots of couples pictured from their shoulders up, plus a 40-something woman crouched behind her dog after enjoying a stroll on a nude beach.

But the story doesn’t end there.  As she lowered the banner, Shirley looked directly across the mall corridor from her location into a full-size window promotion for a well-known chain that sells novelty items. The feature items?  A corset “trio” complete with garter belt and skimpy bra–modeled on a poster by a woman wearing the getup and little else while grasping the metal pole on a touring bus. Delightfully surprised men look on, and a girlfriend snaps pictures. Oh…plus a few adult “novelties” in a briefcase are also on display.

Ironic, huh?

Admittedly, the store is a rent paying tenant, and the chamber of commerce conducting its trade show was a guest.  Hence Shirley’s tactful cooperation (FYI: she did follow up the day’s events with a very well-stated letter to the chamber president.)

But what does it say about current attitudes toward nudity in this country when a banner in which 40-something adults appear where there’s little more than implied simple nudity and it triggers a complaint within minutes?  Yet crowds pass novelties, lingerie, or T-shirts bearing crass slogans, offered for sale. And they don’t seem to bat an eye.

From time to time, I am asked, “Why do we even need an AANR?” I hope this story provides another answer.  We’ll continue to do what we have done since 1931: advocating for nudity within appropriate settings and educating the public about the wholesome benefits that enjoying nudity offers.

For those who want something else, it appears they’ll have to visit the local mall.

By AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf from the February 12 AANR Weekly Report.

9th Circuit Rules Indecent Exposure / Nudity Not a Crime of “Moral Turpitude”

February 16th, 2010

In a landmark decision a panel of the US Court of Appeals ruled this week that a past conviction for indecent exposure in California did not automatically bar a Mexican immigrant from seeking to remain in the country on the grounds that his deportation would cause undue hardship for his wife and children, who are U.S. citizens.

Writing for the panel in the case of Nunez v. Holder, Circuit Judge Stephen Reinhardt explained that having two or more crimes of moral turpitude on one’s record within a ten year period would trigger an automatic denial of the request under immigration law (Nunez also had a conviction for a shoplifting incident.)  However, Judge Reinhardt added that the issue of whether an indecent exposure charge was sufficiently severe less clear:

“We start by recognizing one point that does not appear to be in dispute. Exposing oneself in a public place is not necessarily lewd, or base, vile and depraved as traditionally required by our traditional definition of moral turpitude.  For example, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the California courts appear to agree, a sunbather who removes all his clothes to tan on an unoccupied public beach and wakes to find himself surrounded by offended beachgoers has done nothing either lewd or depraved and thus is neither in violation… nor guilty of a morally turpitudinous act.”

Consistent with its role as advocate for nudity, AANR follows developments such as the Nunez case closely.  Moreover, because we believe that enjoyment of one’s own nudity within appropriate settings is a basic and fundamental right, AANR occasionally become involved in such cases.  (We once provided expert testimony in an asylum case before the immigration courts when the petitioner convincingly argued that he would face serious persecution in his home country where he had become a leading nudist figure for which he was beaten and threatened with worse.)

Thank you for providing a credible voice for nudity to those who wouldn’t have a voice without you.

Huffington Post Reports on AANR Press Release

January 14th, 2010

The American Association for Nude Recreation was featured in Wednesday’s Huffington Post Technology section in an article about body scanning at airports. The piece included an excerpt from a press release sent out last week by AANR endorsing the body scanning technology and  a quote by AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf with a link back to the AANR website.

Regular readers of this blog will note that responses to the press release here–and elsewhere–are sharply divided on the issue, as is the media. While some have concerns, recent articles in Newsweek and USA Today have endorsed the scans’ safety and their ability to keep passengers safer.

Nudists Agree: Airport Scanning that ‘Takes It Off’ is Good for America

January 8th, 2010

KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA (January 7, 2010) - Full body scanning machines proposed in major airports may involve an image received by screeners of travelers in their “altogether,” but all together, scanning makes sense.  So endorses the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.AANR.com), the oldest and largest group representing nudists in the US and Canada.

“Put this issue in its proper perspective,” recommends AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf.  “A trained security professional in a remote monitoring station takes a few seconds discreetly screening passengers to be sure they’re only bringing what nature gave them aboard.  In exchange for safer skies, AANR believes it’s completely worth it.  But you don’t have to be a nudist to agree these measures are based on common sense.”

Adds Schuttauf, “Polls regularly show that about one in five North Americans have skinny-dipped in mixed company already. So if travelers just think of the screen as a virtual skinny-dip, something regarded as American as apple pie since before Norman Rockwell, everyone wins in the name of better air travel security. And as an added bonus, you can add the experience to your ‘bucket list’ as a virtual dipping of one’s toe into taking a Nakation - that’s a nudist vacation!”

The American Association for Nude Recreation is the credible voice of reason on issues relevant to nude recreation and Nakationing in appropriate settings, serving more than 213,000 individuals who enjoy clothes-free and clothing-optional recreation throughout North America.  For further information on nude recreation and the association’s affiliated clubs, contact AANR at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or visit the association’s Web site at www.aanr.com.

The above press release was sent out yesterday into the blogosphere and has already been picked up by The Awl blog and Twitter feeds, with other media contacting the AANR office for interviews.

You Might Be a Nudist If …

January 7th, 2010

Below is an excerpt from AANR President John Kinman’s President’s Podium column that will appear in the February issue of The Bulletin.

While nude recreation and nude travel opportunities have grown a great deal over the past several years, we are still mostly a boutique business compared with large textile resorts with greater economies of scale.  If you’re willing to pay more to wear less, you could be a nudist.

I’ve heard of some other descriptions of nudist travelers.  With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy and his comedy routine, “You might be a redneck,” I offer the following:

YOU MIGHT BE A NUDIST IF:

  • You spend a great weekend at a nudist resort and are almost to the exit gate when you realize that you forgot to get dressed.

  • You sign up to a time share presentation, take the free gift, and when shown the other resorts you could trade for ask, “Which ones allow me to be nude?”

  • You start to walk out of your RV in the morning naked and, for a moment, need to verify that you aren’t staying at a KOA.

  • You are never without a towel.

  • You choose an upstairs room at a hotel with an interior hallway so that your window curtains can be left open and still allow you to be nude.

  • When checking in to the Holiday Inn you ask, “What are the clothing-optional hours for the pool and spa?”

  • At home, you keep a robe by your front door.

  • You buy a velcro waist band to hold tennis balls.

  • You can actually identify with this list.

AANR’s Nakation Box Makes CNBC Holiday Gift List

December 5th, 2009

For the second time this holiday season, AANR’s Nakation in a Box has appeared on a list of gift suggestions for the person who has everything. See  Splash Magazine’s Holiday Travel & Leisure Gifts for 2009 here.

CNBC–the very popular cable news channel–is featuring the Association’s Nakation box on its list of “unusual” gifts along with the question, “[is this gift] stupid or cool?”

Of the voting responses collected to date, a majority aren’t completely sold on the idea.  However, the 26% who say it’s cool are right in line with other poll results that show more than 1 in 4 of those in North America have given skinny-dipping a try, and that about 1 in 5 would find visiting a nude beach or resort while on vacation a very desirable experience.

You can read the CNBC article–and perhaps vote to help boost rankings a little–by clicking here.
