Nudist & Proud

The Last Supper - When we came out of the clothes closet and proclaimed we were nudists

Hi, This is Tom and Mary Clare Mulhall. We own The Terra Cotta Inn, Palm Springs, California. We have a fun coming out of the clothes closet story.

We met in college, skinny dipped and loved it. In our early 20's, we saw an ad or story in a local Chicago paper about a nudist campground in Wisconsin. We went there, and were hooked forever.

And we love nudism so much, we started Terra Cotta Inn in December, 1994.

We were like typical nudists, still in the closet. Well, if you live in Chicago, and move to Palm Springs, I can guarantee you that your relatives WILL visit you during the cold winters. Thus, we knew we had to come out of the closet before we moved.

Mary Clare is an excellent cook. She used to write cookbooks before it was trendy and was the director of the test kitchens at Quaker Oats. We had been having Thanksgiving at our house for the relatives for years. That Thanksgiving in 1994 was to be the "last supper" before we moved to Palm Springs.

All dinner long everyone was asking us about our plans and resort. Mary Clare and I decided to tell the relatives we were starting a nudist resort after dinner.

Since I have the biggest mouth (this is Tom and I am the AANR PR chair), Mary Clare let me break the news.

I started slowly by letting everyone know how Palm Springs is famous for its sunshine (we're the sunniest city in the US). That many California women did not like tan lines and that when they sunbathed, they unbuckled their bikini tops so they didn't have tan lines on their backs.

Everyone agreed. I then said well, they don't want tan lines on their fronts either, so many women don't bother to wear swimsuit tops poolside. Everyone gasped and asked "what are you going to do?" We said we'll let guests topless sunbathe like at other places.

I then said many men and women don't like any tan lines at all. Again they asked, "what will you do?"

And I said, we'll let them sunbathe nude like other places.

Someone asked, "If they're going nude, how will you dress?"

I said, "We've been to nude beaches in Europe, so if everyone is nude, we'll go swimming with them without bathing suits on too."

That got everyone talking the rest of the night.

Later on, my dad who is ethnic Irish Catholic cornered me and said, "What about your soul?"

When I asked "What are you talking about?" He told me I was going to be damned to hell for being nude. I told him he and I used to swim nude at the local YMCA and in Boy Scouts. He said that was different because no women saw us nude. I took a chance and told him to talk to his parish priest, I'm sure he will say it was OK.

Well that Sunday my dad called after mass, said he talked to the priest and he said as long as there was no adultery, it was not a sin to nude sunbathe.

Thus my parents have been out to see us many times before my dad passed away. And we have had many relatives visit us and the majority have gone nude.

We encourage everyone to proudly proclaim you are a Nudist and Proud

Came Out to Mom

I told a friend last year about my decision to live as a nudist, next was my daughter. Since then, I have told other friends and have had no negative reactions from anyone. Most recently I told my 78-year-old mom I'm a nudist. She said she was shocked but then only advised me to be careful. (I'll be visiting her again next week for two weeks to get her moved into her new mobile home. If she's okay with it I'll go nude in her presence some, I'm sure).

I also wrote a letter to the Sheriff, District Attorney, and Nevada State Attorney General to clarify the laws on nudity - explaining I AM indeed a nudist.

Additionally, I suggested to my employer (MGM Resorts International) the corporation look into opening a nudist casino/resort. The idea was rejected but at least I was thanked for my "creative and interesting ideas for expanding the brand."

To date I have experienced no negativity toward my choice to live as a nudist.
