Have Some Fun Along the Way

My AANR membership card says that my wife Nancy and I have officially been members since 1986, though we had been frequenting Restful Haven Club (now Mountaindale Sun Resort) and going to Rooster Rock State Park nude beach in Oregon for several years before that.

We enjoyed the sun and visiting with our many friends. Two of which were Wayne and Cathy Roberts who lived down the street from Nancy and me. After years of attending regional and national conventions we ventured to our first Northwest Nudist Association (now AANR-Northwest) board meeting in 1991 in Boise, Idaho. Nancy wanted to learn more about how the region ran and I just wanted to go visit.

We had just recently purchased a new fifth wheel trailer, so I became the chauffeur. Leaving on a Friday afternoon after work we drove through the evening, and eight hours later pulled into the backyard of the home that served as the base for the Bare Backers’ meeting.

Arriving late and in the dark, we just parked in their driveway and in the morning I got the rig parked. Nancy, Wayne and Cathy went to meetings, and in between sun and snow showers I sat around and visited. Little did I know that within a couple of years I would be writing newsletters for Restful Haven and succeed Nancy as the region treasurer and take over the editorship of the Northwest Nudescene. This trip would be what brought me to become an active member of AANR and not just the chauffeur.

For those of you that do not know me, I have held all of the offices on the AANRNW regional board and have lots of fond memories of my travels and friends I have met along the way. Even though I have been active in AANR-NW government off and on for more than 20 years, there has always been time for fun.

One of my favorite memories of the fun along the way was at an AANR Convention held at The Willamettans. At the final activity of the convention, which happened to be a dance, John Kinman (past AANR president) coerced all of the regional presidents past and present; Pat Brown (AANR president at the time); and Erich Schuttauf (AANR executive director at the time) to get up on the stage and sing “Elvira.” Folks, this was hilarious as the only voice that could really carry a tune was Erich’s. Most of us were laughing so hard we couldn’t sing, and our membership watching this knew we were just like them when it came to singing (and maybe worse).

Being a member of AANR for me is really about fun. Playing tennis in the nude, going to clubs and relaxing and of course, visiting with friends. Yes, there are business meetings and working to protect our rights to enjoy nude recreation. Thanks to Wayne who pointed me down this road. It was always fun.

So, get out, visit a beach or a club and have some fun along the way!

Taken from the AANR Monthly Bulletin, "Across the Board" brings information and thoughts from the Governing Board of AANR to you. The Board values your membership and wants to make sure that it is doing what is right for the members and clubs. The first step is good two-way communication.
