A Report From NCSL

July 30th, 2010

By AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf

Throughout this week I have been attending the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Louisville, Kentucky, along with AANR President-Elect Susan Weaver.  My daughters also leant a helping hand as we staffed a booth for the 17th consecutive year at this very important conference.

Overview. According to personal conversations I had with NCSL staff, approximately 4,500 lawmakers, staff, and fellow exhibitors attended this year’s event. The guest speakers included U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. True to NCSL’s bipartisan philosophy, they also included Senator Mitch McConnell, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, plus a major general just back from duty in Iraq.

Other Exhibitors. To give you an idea of how significant an opportunity this presents to reach influential policymakers with a message, one need only consider the caliber of corporations who have made it a point to be there recently: Coca-Cola (to combat recent attempts to place a “sin tax” on sugared drinks much as tobacco is taxed), Wal-Mart (to deal with increasingly difficult zoning issues and “no Wal-Mart here” campaigns, M&M Mars (because the sale of candy in schools and youth programs is drawing fire as obesity rates climb), Wells Fargo (the home mortgage crisis and banking regulation), to name a few.

It doesn’t stop with corporations: the American Automobile Association (AAA), the ASPCA and Humane Society, plus the American Cancer Society and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) were represented.

The Federal Government and Unions do not miss the event either: The U.S. Dept. of Education, U.S. Army, AFSCME, and SECIU unions (who represent some of the largest blocks of workers) all make a point to be there.

Influence. But here’s a fact that may surprise you:  Your American Association for Nude Recreation has been consistently attending for longer than ANY of the above-mentioned groups.

That’s correct.  AANR’s “seniority” places us 37th in the all-time list of those who have been reaching influentials there.  Only a handful of groups (including the National Rifle Association, the pharmacy industry, and both sides of the tobacco debate) have an edge on AANR.  To give you an idea of just what that means, consider that AARP is about twenty positions below us.  Wells Fargo ranks 112, Wal-Mart, M&M Mars, and Coca Cola do not even make it into the top 125.

That seniority represents much more than bragging rights.  We receive very high priority in selecting next year’s booth location.  (We will be directly at the main entrance to the exhibit hall in San Antonio for 2011.)  It also means that AANR has woven the subject of nude recreation into the very fabric of the American political scene.

Policy. There may be an occasional smirk from a “rookie” attending for the first time.  It is also true that we bring a welcomed smile and bit of humor to sessions that involve subjects as intense as the banking crisis, huge budget deficits within states, and immigration.  But veteran attendees and the thousands who come by AANR’s booth to talk with us also know we mean serious business.  We discuss the challenges of zoning, liquor licensing, nudist publishing, and how nude recreation is sometimes confused with adult entertainment.

Our volunteers help change mindsets.  In a few cases we have made AANR members out of lawmakers, staff, and vendors… Yes. Yes we have!  They have stopped by to proudly show us membership cards and tell us about the clubs and beaches they visit.

With each passing year, it also becomes more and more difficult for lawmakers to view nude recreation as something on the fringe, novel, or otherwise “out there.”  The best evidence is the willingness of lawmakers and staff to approach our table no matter what party affiliation they hold or state from which they come.  We gain inside information on what prompted adverse and positive legislation, and how to deal with it. We gain valuable contacts too.

Canadian Leadership and Beyond.  It is a lesser-known fact that more Canadian lawmakers attend than those from any given state or two.  This means that we have an opportunity to explain nude recreation to many neighbors to the north   Leaders from as far as Europe and Africa also attend.

Media Attention. AANR comes to NCSL prepared with press releases.  Susan and I make ourselves available to talk with reporters and journalists.  This year Susan was filmed on camera by ABC News, New York although a segment has not yet aired.  The following stories have already mentioned us, however:

Take A Northwest Caribbean Holiday

July 28th, 2010

The 2010 AANR Convention is just around the corner, and this year’s convention promises to be fantastic on many levels. The new AANR Board of Trustees will be sworn in, there will be meetings to discuss AANR business, interesting seminars–and the entertainment promises to be phenomenal.

Sun Meadow Resort in Worley, Idaho, will host the convention from August 9-15. Already well known for their high-level entertainment, Sun Meadow officials have put together a schedule of events and activities that encourages visitors to arrive early and stay late. Visit the Sun Meadow website for convention information, entertainment lineup and download registration forms.

Just added to the list of entertainers is Bakra Bata, a steel drum band that uses Caribbean themed instruments and costuming to create a concert/dance that will be the perfect finale to the convention’s Northwest Caribbean Holiday theme.

AANR Represented at NCSL

July 26th, 2010

Members of the American Association for Nude Recreation will be handing out thousands of commemorative lapel pins to lawmakers and staff during the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) this week in Louisville, Kentucky.   They’re also happy to answer the question, “Where does a nudist pin it?”

“On our lapels, of course,” says AANR Executive Director Erich Schuttauf.  “We want policymakers to know that we practice our pastime within appropriate settings.  At a formal meeting like NCSL we will be fully clothed in business suits with lapels and ties; skirts and blouses for the ladies among us.”

AANR pins enjoy great popularity as souvenirs of the conference, where leaders in state government gather to discuss creative solutions to such issues as the budget crisis currently experienced in so many treasuries.  Associations, companies, and causes also work booths where they distribute literature and speak on behalf of constituents.  When legislators stop by the AANR booth they learn how affiliated clubs contribute to local economies, promote tourism, and create jobs.  AANR changes the design of its pin each year to enhance the collectible factor.

One thing that won’t change, however, is inclusion of the Association’s website at www.aanr.com.

“AANR.com is all you really need to know to access considerable information about our history, our 260 clubs and resorts across North America, and why we enjoy what we do,” notes Susan Weaver, president-elect of AANR.

Read and Post AANR Nudist Resort & Park Reviews

July 8th, 2010

Let us introduce you to www.ReviewResorts.com a website specializing in user-generated resort reviews. A while back, ReviewResorts received a review of Hidden Beach Resort near Cancun. This page quickly made the site’s top ten most viewed! With this great response, they created a module entirely dedicated to AANR nudist resorts and parks for people to post reviews. There are numerous nice reviews that portray the resorts and fellow nudists in a very positive image.

ReviewResorts.com is also loaded with hundreds of traditional Hawaii and Mexico beach resorts, Club Med, Las Vegas hotels, cruises, day spas and RV camping resorts as well as the module of AANR nudist resorts and parks. This creates an excellent opportunity for AANR to get the message out to a wider audience of people who might be simply searching for Hawaii or Mexico resort information. Some of these folks may have never thought of a clothing optional holiday and might just consider a visit after reading the nice reviews.

The goal for ReviewResorts is to have 50 or so Clothing Optional Parks and Resorts in a module that is presented side-by-side the traditional vacation destinations. So look up www.ReviewResorts.com and post a review of your favorite AANR resort. Only your first name and state are listed for privacy.

For resort owners and managers, the site provides an excellent opportunity to let your members tell your story. You hear all the time how your AANR family nudist resort or park is truly special for your members. Allowing them to tell what it means personally is a very powerful sales tool. Add your facility to ReviewResorts FREE here.  Then mention it in your email communication encouraging your members and guests to post a review.

Has Facebook’s Anti-Nudity Policy Gone Too Far?

July 6th, 2010

After angering mothers everywhere by banning photos of breastfeeding and prohibiting a cancer survivor’s photos of her mastectomy scars to raise breast cancer awareness citing “inappropriate content,” Facebook has now deleted pictures of naked dolls. Victoria Buckley, who owns a high-end jewelry store in Australia, was told by Facebook that posting photographs of the dolls on her fan page breach the site’s terms of service. The dolls in question are designed by Marina Bychkova of Enchanted Doll, based in Canada. Made of porcelain, the dolls sell from $5000 to $45,000, which is the price one recently sold for on eBay. There can be a two- to three-year wait for those who want to buy one.

Buckley has appealed to Facebook but has not yet received a response. She censored the images of the dolls on her Facebook fan page but has posted the uncensored versions in a new group called “Save Ophelia-exquisite doll censored by Facebook” to gauge response to the new group before deciding whether to put the dolls back on her original page.

Buckley had also posted the photographs on Flickr, where they were also removed.

Click here to read more, watch a video and vote whether or not you think the dolls constitute “inappropriate content.”

AANR Supports NJ Top-Free Beach Proposal

July 1st, 2010

On Tuesday, the American Association for Nude Recreation sent a detailed letter of support backed by statistics and information in credible publications such Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today to the city of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The city is considering designating a portion of the Asbury Park beachfront as “topless optional.” The package sent by AANR showed the benefits of European-style sunbathing in regard to tourism dollars and community acceptance and was sent by e-mail, fax and Federal Express.

AANR also included a small donation to the city’s Parks and Recreation summer project fund. City officials will meet on July  7 to further discuss the top-free proposal.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Topless Optional Beach Possible for New Jersey

June 24th, 2010

A proposal being considered by the city council in Asbury Park, New Jersey, may result in a topless beach. The beach would be classified as “topless optional” and located at the far northern end of Asbury Park’s beachfront.

The Jersey shoreline is already home to long-time nudist favorite Gunnison Beach on Sandy Hook, which is sanctioned by the U.S. Park Service. Gunnison is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, along with a nude beach in a remote area on Fire Island in New York.

Currently no municipality in New Jersey officially sanctions topless areas, and some sections of beach ban topless sunbathing. But Deputy Mayor and City Councilman John Loffredo said, “Why not?” when asked about the possibility of the topless beach at Asbury Park. He has asked the City Manager and City Attorney to come back with a full report for an upcoming July 7 meeting.
